5 Barcelona players who can help Lionel Messi this season (2021-22)

|

Despite Lionel Messi’s best efforts, Barcelona had one of their worst seasons in recent memory, both on and off the field. In the 2020-21 season, the six-time Ballon d’Or winner contributed to 48% of Barcelona’s La Liga goals.

Lionel Messi was directly involved in 50 goals in 47 appearances across all competitions last season (38 goals, 12 assists). Despite a poor season, Messi and co lifted a record-31st Copa del Rey trophy, but will look to improve this season.

Lionel Messi is a free agent for the first time in 20 years, as he does not have a contract with his boyhood club. However, the Argentine is expected to take a pay cut of 50% and sign a new contract in the coming weeks.

Following an over-reliance on the Copa America winner in the attacking third last season, the Catalans will be hoping for more from the other world-class talent in their ranks this season.

On that note, let’s take a look at the five Barcelona players who can help Lionel Messi this season.

#5 Ousmane Dembele

Due to Barcelona’s crippling financial problems, Ronald Koeman will be forced to rely heavily on the club’s current squad for the upcoming season.

In this scenario, Ousmane Dembele will play a key role for Blaugrana in the 2021-22 season. The Frenchman arrived at the Camp Nou for a whopping £121.5 million from Borussia Dortmund, but he has yet to live up to the price tag.

However, in his relatively short career for Barcelona, the 24-year-old has shown flashes of world-class talent. Dembele has been directly involved in 51 goals in 118 appearances across all competitions (30 goals, 21 assists).

The Frenchman performed admirably in his final season at Camp Nou, tallying 11 goals and five assists in 44 appearances. Barcelona is lacking in wingers/wide players, and Dembele will provide more width and creative flair to Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, and Memphis Depay.

#4 Ansu Fati

Since his breakout season in the 2019-20 season, the La Masia graduate has been dubbed the heir to Barcelona great Lionel Messi.

Ansu Fati is one of the continent’s most exciting prospects, having made 43 appearances for Barcelona in his relatively short career. The 18-year-old displayed tremendous talent and has the potential to be the next big thing in world football.

Fati had an outstanding debut season at the club, scoring eight goals and providing one assist in 33 appearances. The young Spaniard had a strong start to the 2020-21 season, with five goals and four assists in just ten appearances. His season, however, was cut short due to a horrific meniscus injury.

The wonderkid has yet to return from injury, but he is expected to play in the upcoming 2021-22 season. If Ansu Fati can regain full fitness, Lionel Messi and the youngster could have a fruitful master-protegee relationship.
