Argentina won the Copa America 2021 final 1-0 over Brazil earlier today, ending a more than two-decade wait for an international championship.
It was also Lionel Messi’s first triumph with Argentina, and it was much sweeter because it came against hated rivals Brazil.
For the final, Argentina manager Luis Scaloni made as many as five changes, which paid off as La Albiceleste appeared to be the fresher team.
Brazil relied heavily on Neymar, who had a terrible night as Argentina physically countered his threat and prevented him from scoring.
The game was won by a single Angel Di Maria goal in the 22nd minute, when the PSG winger took advantage of Renan Lodi’s mistake to chip past Ederson.
Richarlison thought he had equalized for Brazil, but the goal was disallowed due to offside.
Argentina had an opportunity to win the game with three minutes to go when Lionel Messi only had to beat Ederson, but his control let him down. In the end, it didn’t matter because Argentina triumphed over Brazil.
Lionel Messi sweeps all honours to lead Argentina to the Copa America championship.
Argentina’s game-winning goal came from DI Maria, who was the only player in the tournament who did not play alongside Lionel Messi. Messi had a huge impact on this version of the Copa America, even though he didn’t play a part in the goal.
Lionel Messi finished the tournament as the tournament’s top goal scorer and assist creator, and was by far the finest player.
