On Saturday night, Lionel Messi completed his dazzling soccer career by leading Argentina to a 1-0 victory over host Brazil in the Copa América final in Rio de Janeiro.
After a run of terrible, torturous, and aggravating failures, including possibly the most humbling setback of his career — against Germany in the World Cup final — within the same stadium, Rio’s gigantic Maracan, in 2014, Messi finally got his first trophy with Argentina.
When the final whistle rang, Messi went to his knees and was instantly embraced by his teammates, his relief evident. They were lifting him above their shoulders and hurling him in the air moments later.
