SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) — Argentina defeated Uruguay 1-0 in its second Copa America encounter on Friday, giving Lionel Messi’s team a four-point advantage over Chile in Group A.
Guido Rodriguez, a midfielder, scored the game’s sole goal in the 13th minute at the Mané Garrincha stadium in Brasilia, with a header after Messi crossed from the left. Before going in, the ball hit Fernando Muslera’s right post.
Chile had previously defeated Bolivia 1-0 thanks to a goal from English-Chilean attacker Ben Brereton.
After a 1-1 draw with Chile, Argentina altered practically the whole back four in search of defensive stability. Gonzalo Montiel, Lucas Martnez Quarta, and Nicolás Tagliafico were replaced by Nahuel Molina, Cristian Romero, and Marcos Acua, respectively, at right back, defender, and left back. The sole remaining defender was Nicolás Otamendi. Rodriguez took over for the injured Leandro Paredes.
Argentina dominated for practically the entire game against a Uruguayan team that featured Luis Suárez and Edinson Cavani, two of the game’s most potent offensive players.
Rodrigo de Paul, an Argentina player, felt his squad deserved to win after not winning since November 2020.
“Today, we tried to work as a tighter one. We know we can score at any time with the guys we have here,” he remarked. “Today we took another small step toward betterment, and we will rejoice.”
In the last four games, Oscar Tabárez’s club has failed to win. In a press conference, he said that while Uruguay did not have many chances against Argentina, the team still has a good chance of progressing to the knockout round in the next three games.
“We have guys who know how to score goals, but we haven’t been able to use them,” he explained.
Argentina’s next match is against Paraguay on Monday, the same day as Uruguay’s second match against Chile in the competition.
With a win over Uruguay, Argentina might finish first in its group and avoid a first-round matchup with defending champion Brazil, who is in Group B.
Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni, who had been chastised following his team’s 1-1 draw with Chile on Monday, was relieved by the result.
Each group’s top four teams will proceed to the knockout stage.
