Argentina’s Guido Rodriguez scores the game-winning goal against Uruguay at the Copa America.

Argentina defeated Uruguay 1-0, with Guido Rodriguez scoring the game’s only goal.

With a win over their longtime enemies, Argentina has ended a string of three consecutive draws. In contrast to Argentina, who played on Monday, this was Uruguay’s first Copa America encounter, and they were well rested.

Rodriguez, who was not even slated to start for Argentina, came in as a late replacement for Leandro Paredes and proved his worth. Rodriguez headed the ball into the net after Lionel Messi crossed the ball into the penalty area.

Early in the second half, Lionel Scaloni made two substitutions. Lautaro Martinez was replaced by Joaquin Correa, who seemed out of sorts once again. Exequiel Palacios was replaced by Gio Lo Celso in the second change. Uruguay came near to scoring once when a cross was put into the penalty box, but it was unnoticed by everyone.

Nicolas Gonzalez was replaced by Angel Di Maria, who put in a strong performance, making runs and assaulting the Uruguayan defense. Lionel Messi had a few chances inside the penalty area, but his attempts were blocked.

Argentina held on to their 1-0 victory after a last substitution of German Pezzella for Rodrigo De Paul.

Lionel Scaloni’s side put up a strong performance, with 0 shots on target and three attempts off target.
