As the West Indies announce a 13-man T20I squad, Andre Russell is recalled and Hetmyer is dropped.

The West Indies have named a 13-man squad for the first two Twenty20 Internationals against South Africa. Andre Russell, a veteran all-rounder, has been restored to the squad, but star batsman Shimron Hetmyer has been left out.

Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, Lendl Simmons, and Fidel Edwards are among the seasoned stars on the T20 circuit in Kieron Pollard’s side.

Andre Russell, a two-time World T20 winner, will provide an X-factor to the side, according to Lead Selector Roger Harper.

“Andre Russell will add that ‘X’ factor to the team. He is an impact player with both bat and ball and lends greater depth in both departments. The aim is to build on the performance against Sri Lanka earlier this year, to build confidence while determining our best squad and team as we run into the ICC T20 World Cup.”

Andre Russell hasn’t played in a T20I for the West Indies since the March 2020 tour of Sri Lanka. In 49 matches for the West Indies, he has scored 540 runs and taken 26 wickets.

Sheldon Cottrell, Oshane Thomas, and Hayden Walsh Jr. are among the noticeable absences from the 18-man supplemental squad that has been training in Grenada.
