Italy manager Roberto Mancini considers Bonucci and Chiellini to be the best center-backs in the world. Mancini lauds the pair’s resolve to shine in every match at Euro 2020. Prior to Italy’s semi-final match against Spain, the Italian coach said:
“For years, we’ve heard that they’re the best center-back pairing on the planet. Their strength comes from their desire to shine in every match.”
Leonardo Bonucci has been a constant for Roberto Mancini’s team, appearing in every game thus far in the tournament. Meanwhile, Giorgio Chiellini missed two games against Wales and Austria before returning in the quarterfinals to face Belgium.
The pair will now face Spain, the top scorers at Euro 2020, who have scored five goals in back-to-back games against Slovakia and Croatia.
At Euro 2020, Italy had one of the best defenses. So far in the tournament, the Azzurri have only conceded two goals. Italy went through the group stage without losing a goal until their games against Austria and Belgium, when they conceded once each.
Aside from Bonucci and Chiellini, Italy has had a number of outstanding players at this summer’s competition. Due to their strong performances at Euro 2020, players like Lorenzo Insigne, Manuel Locatelli, and Nicolo Barella have drawn interest from a number of European clubs.
