Euro 2020: The tournament’s top five midfielders

Euro 2020 was everything and more that one would anticipate from such a high-profile competition. Italy has won the European Championship after defeating England in a thrilling final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

The game was close throughout, and the teams couldn’t be separated after 90 minutes and extra time. In a shootout, the Azzurri defeated the Three Lions 3-2. Jordan Pickford and Gianluigi Donnarumma each gave it their all in goal, but only one walked away with the trophy.

Individual performances at Euro 2020 were outstanding.

There were several outstanding individual and team performances in Euro 2020. With a multitude of world-class players in their lineups, European giants such as France, the Netherlands, Germany, and Portugal were eliminated early. Simultaneously, a number of young players rose to the occasion and stole the show at the continental competition.

We also had the opportunity to observe some of the greatest technicians in action. Several games at Euro 2020 were decided in the midfield, as expected. The competition was nothing short of a spectacle for onlookers, with players willing to give it their best for their countries.

Let’s take a look at five of the top midfielders from Euro 2020 without further ado.

#5 Paul Pogba (France)

France v Germany - UEFA Euro 2020: Group F
France v Germany – UEFA Euro 2020: Group F

Paul Pogba isn’t a particularly reliable footballer. There are a few flaws in his game as well. While his close control and ability to maneuver tight spaces might be impressive at times, he has a history of losing control in potentially dangerous situations.

With a relentless N’Golo Kante at his side, Pogba becomes far more expressive and displays his full range of abilities. Throughout Euro 2020, the Frenchman made several fantastic passes for his strikers and full-backs. He even scored one of the tournament’s most important goals against Denmark.

Pogba put up world-class performances against Germany, Portugal, and Switzerland. At Euro 2020, he played a total of five accurate through balls, the most of any player in the competition. It’s worth noting that France only advanced to the Round of 16 stage.

Pogba also received two man-of-the-match honours and was a leading contender for Player of the Tournament until they were eliminated.

#4 Marco Verratti (Italy)

Italy v Wales - UEFA Euro 2020: Group A
Italy v Wales – UEFA Euro 2020: Group A

Italy’s roster is full with talented technicians, which is why Verratti’s absence was not felt in the Azzurri’s first two Euro 2020 matches. Manuel Locatelli, who stepped in for Verratti, was instrumental in both victories.

Verratti returned for the game against Wales and put in a string of five outstanding performances. At Euro 2020, he won eight tackles and generated the most opportunities, with 14, in the competition.

Since his debut against Wales in the final group stage game, the PSG midfielder has been a part of everything good the Italians have accomplished. In the final versus England, he was perhaps the greatest midfielder, completing 112 of 119 attempted passes. At Euro 2020, Verratti also had three assists.
