Drew McIntyre wants to meet John Cena when the 16-time World Champion returns to the WWE ring.
McIntyre, a two-time WWE Champion, recently expressed interest in facing Cena in a main event fight at WrestleMania 39. Cena responded to the remark by posting an Instagram photo of McIntyre.
McIntyre expressed his desire to compete against the WWE veteran in a new interview with On Demand Entertainment’s Melissa Nathoo, saying:
“100%,” McIntyre responded, “and I sincerely hope it happens.” “John has been a part of my life since I was 22 years old. I believe I turned 36 last week, and we’ve never played a meaningful singles match. We’ve never had a singles match before, which astounds me. We’ve done tag bouts and multi-man matches together, but we’ve never done a singles match.”
Although no official date for John Cena’s return has been set, he is largely expected to return to WWE television this summer. The 44-year-old is expected to face Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship on August 21 at SummerSlam.
Drew McIntyre on John Cena’s career accomplishments
John Cena is widely regarded as one of the best WWE Superstars of all time. He was a five-time WrestleMania main-eventer who spent over a decade as WWE's top babyface before focusing on his acting career in recent years.
Drew McIntyre, one of WWE's major babyfaces at the moment, believes he has no better opponent than John Cena.
“Where I am today career-wise, after so many ups and downs, I managed to reach the pinnacle of the industry, and where John is right now, he's just on another level,” McIntyre remarked. “He conquered WWE, he's conquering Hollywood, and he still prefers WWE over everything else. He wants to return and assist, as well as have those big contests. As far as I'm concerned, no match is more important than John Cena vs. Drew McIntyre.
On Sunday, Drew McIntyre will face Bobby Lashley for the WWE Championship in a Hell in a Cell match. If the Scot loses, he will be barred from challenging Lashley for the title again.
