How did India’s most successful sprinter, Dutee Chand, overcome the shadows of hyperandrogenism?


Dutee Chand is one of the few Indian track and field athletes who has made an impact on the international level. Dutee Chand is one of India’s most famous athletes. Over the years, she has competed for India in the Olympics, World Championships, Asian Games, and Asian Championships.

Dutee Chand has a slew of Asian gold under her belt and is undoubtedly India’s best sprinter since P.T. Usha.

These honors, however, do not make Dutee Chand the celebrity she is. Her legend was cemented when she battled the hyperandrogenism scandal that was thrust upon her in 2014 with guts and tenacity.

Dutee Chand’s career started out well.

Dutee Chand was born on the 3rd of February 1996 in the Jajpur district of Odisha to a poor weaving family. Dutee’s aptitude was recognized early on, and at the age of ten, she was enrolled in a government sports center.

When she ran 11.80 seconds in her qualifying heat at the U18 National Championships at the age of 16, Dutee became Asia’s 4th fastest U18 athlete in the 100m. In the qualifying heat of the 2013 World Youth Championships in Donetsk, she set a personal best time of 11.62 seconds.
