On Sunday, Caeleb Dressel and Katie Ledecky shone at the second wave of the US Olympic swimming trials. With a dominant victory in the 100m butterfly, Dressel added another event to his already jam-packed Tokyo Olympic calendar. In the 800m freestyle, however, Ledecky swept away the competition, winning by five seconds over second-placed Katie Grimes.
Caeleb Dressel dominates the US Olympic swimming trials wave 2
Caeleb Dressel, a two-time world champion, won another event at the US Olympic swimming trials wave 2 after winning the men’s 100m butterfly. He won the Tokyo Olympic berth with a time of 49.87 seconds. This was his sixth-fastest time in the pool in his life.
Dressel swam aggressively in wave 2 of the US Olympic swimming trials, clocking a time of 23.16, but took a little longer to complete the final lap (26.71).
The American swimmer currently has eight of the top 11 fastest swims in history, with five of them clocking in under 50 seconds.
Tom Shields, a finalist in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, came in second to qualify for his second consecutive Games. He ran in 51.19 seconds, which was his quickest time in five years.
Teenager Luca Urlando, on the other hand, finished third with a personal best of 51.64.
Katie Ledecky to compete in four events at the Tokyo Olympics
After a time of 8:14.62 in Omaha, Katie Ledecky has confirmed her fourth individual race at the Tokyo Olympics. She will now compete in the 200m, 400m, 800m, and 1,500m freestyle events as a result of her triumph.
The 24-year-old made an early statement of dominance, taking off from the gun and swimming away with her fourth victory of the week. Her time of 8:14.64 was just a second faster than her previous best of 8:13.64 set in March.
Katie Grimes, 15, came in second, beating off Haley Anderson, one of the favorites for a spot in
the Tokyo Olympics. She finished the race in 8:20.36 at the US Olympic Swimming trials wave 2.
In the post-race conference, Ledeky praised Grimes and told her “She is the future” of the sport, reported ESPN.
