Match Recap: Sweden vs. Poland at Euro 2020

|

Sweden extended their undefeated run at Euro 2020 with a 3-2 win against Poland, claiming the improbable Group E title.

The Swedes had been on a roll, drawing 0-0 with Spain and defeating Slovakia before to this game. Their form carried over onto the pitch, as they scored the game’s first goal just two minutes in. Sweden maneuvered their way into the final third until the ball was ricocheted to Emil Forsburg. He dribbled past two defenders before firing a left-footed shot into the bottom corner.

Poland should have equalized in the 17th minute after hitting the crossbar twice in a matter of seconds. Star striker Robert Lewandowski got space from a corner, but his initial header bounced off the crossbar. The rebound fell perfectly into his path again, but Lewandowski was unable to hold the ball down. Before Sweden cleared, the ball struck the bar again.

Euro 2020: Poland fights back in the second half, but Sweden holds on for a late victory
Poland threw all they had at the game in the second half in pursuit of a goal. They came near many times in the early parts of the second quarter, thanks to Piort Zielinksi and Grzegorz Kyrchowiak’s efforts.

But they lacked the cutting edge and Sweden punished them again.

In the 59th minute, the Swedes launched an incisive counter-attack. Dejan Kulusevski did well down the right before laying the ball off for Forsburg, who coolly swept home his second of the day. It was also the Leipzig winger’s third goal of Euro 2020.

Poland responded much faster this time around. They snatched a goal back after Zielinski’s long ball forward found Lewandowski in space. The Bayern striker fashioned a chance for himself and produced a brilliant effort from a difficult angle to make it 2-1.

In the 84th minute, Lewandowski leveled the game. In the box, he was identified by replacement Przemyslaw Frankowski. The Pole star tucked it away with his left foot to tie the game at 2-2 and set up a thrilling finish.

However, Viktor Claesson’s winning goal for Sweden dashed Poland’s Euro 2020 hopes. Kulusevski put Cleasson through on goal after another counter-attack. Deep into injury time, the Krasnodar winger beat Wojciech Szczesny at the near post to win the game.

Sweden topped their group as a result of the victory. They will meet Ukraine in the Round of 16 in the Euro 2020 competition. Ukraine only won North Macedonia in their group and lost to the Netherlands and Austria.

Poland was eliminated from Euro 2020 after coming last in their group. Previously, the Poles had lost to Slovakia and drawn with Spain.
