In a thrilling UEFA Euro 2020 match, Switzerland defeated Turkey 3-1. With the win, the Swiss have a chance to advance from Group A to the knockout stages.
Turkey scored the first goal of the game within the first five minutes, after a promising start. Irfan Kahveci’s powerful strike from distance was excellently saved by Yann Sommer after Burak Yilmaz chested the ball down.
The Turks kept fighting to get back into the game. Mert Muldur’s scorching long-range attempt forced Sommer to make another spectacular stop, diving low to his right. He came near again as he ran down the left flank and fired another shot, but the Swiss goalkeeper thwarted him once more. In this vital Euro 2020 match, the Swiss led 2-0 at halftime.
Euro 2020: Turkey fight back in the second half
Despite the fact that Switzerland appeared to be in command, Turkey scored first in the second half to break the game open. Another fantastic long-range goal, this time from Irfan Kahveci, beat Sommer to the upper left corner. It was Turkey’s first goal at Euro 2020.
With the game evenly balanced, the Swiss piled on the pressure once more. Turkey eventually succumbed to Shaqiri’s second goal of the game to make it 3-1. The 29-year-old hammered the ball home with his left foot to put the game to bed after another smart counter-attack.
With four points, Switzerland finished third in Group A of Euro 2020. Wales finished in second place with four points, but due to a stronger goal difference, they qualified directly for the knockout stages. The Swiss will have to wait and see if they can qualify as one of the four best third-place teams from the Euro 2020 group stages.
