Muttiah Muralitharan believes that IPL franchises should consider Sri Lankan spinner Wanindu Hasaranga as a potential option for their teams at the upcoming auction.
However, Muralitharan was quick to point out that Hasaranga will struggle to receive playing time in the IPL because most franchises prefer to go with native Indian spinners. Nonetheless, the Sri Lankan legend believes the 23-year-old will be given a ‘launch’ in the IPL.
In the ongoing limited-overs series against India, Wanindu Hasaranga has been an outstanding bowler for the hosts. The leg spinner recorded scores of 2-28 in the opening T20I, assisting Sri Lanka in restricting the visitors to 164. However, India eventually won the game by 38 runs.
Despite Sri Lanka’s troubles, Wanindu Hasaranga has stood tall, and Muralitharan feels if given the chance, he can become a regular in the IPL. Muralitharan stated in an ESPNCricinfo chat:
“He should be considered by IPL franchises. The issue is that if it’s a local player, he walks into the side. However, if it is an international player, you must determine which franchise desires a foreign spinner.” “It’s a hard business. They will buy him, but playing him will be difficult for a franchise. Because certain franchises prefer Indian spinners over foreign spinners. He’ll have a tryout, and if he gets a game or two and plays well, he’ll be a regular.”
Even in the two One-Day Internationals against India, Hasaranga had an economy rate of 4.32 while taking three wickets. Due to an injury, the spinner was unable to play in the last ODI.
“Wanindu Hasaranga is a very good bowler in the shorter game.” Muttiah Muralitharan’s formal name is Muttiah Muralitharan.
Muttiah Muralitharan stated that Wanindu Hasaranga is well suited to bowl in the shorter forms and emphasized how Suryakumar Yadav’s wicket helped Sri Lanka restrict India in the first T20I. Muralitharan explained:
“Most of the time, he bowls well in T20s. He is a very good bowler in shorter games. He took the wicket of Suryakumar Yadav, which was crucial since Suryakumar would have gone on to score even more runs. The total would have been drastically different.”
Wanindu Hasaranga has 75 wickets in 58 T20 games while bowling at a tight economy of 6.44. Even in T20Is, he has a 6.77 economy after 20 matches. Lower down the order, the 23-year-old is also a useful batsman.
