This summer, six high-profile midfielders could be on the move.

The Euros may be the topic of conversation right now, but clubs have already begun planning for next season.

The summer transfer window will be vital, as European teams are leery of spending large sums on a single player following the financial devastation caused by the COVID-19 outbreak. However, a few top-tier midfielders could leave their current teams during this transfer window.

Many well-known midfielders have been linked with moves elsewhere for a variety of reasons. While it’s unlikely that many big-money transactions will be made, there’s a good chance that a few high-profile players may join new clubs next season.

Let’s take a look at some of the midfielders that could be moving this summer.

#6 Granit Xhaka

Granit Xhaka’s time at Arsenal has divided opinion, therefore his departure this summer is imminent.

The 28-year-old was signed by Arsenal for Β£40.5 million from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2016. Xhaka, a superb passer known for his leadership qualities, had a tumultuous time at Arsenal, with his attitude being heavily criticized. The midfielder’s connection with Arsenal supporters is also tumultuous.

The Switzerland international has been linked with a move to Roma after making 220 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta used Xhaka as a left-back in 2020-21.

#5 Donny van de Beek

Donny van de Beek, a Dutch midfielder, had a difficult season in 2020-21. After scarcely making an appearance for Manchester United, he was forced to withdraw from the Netherlands’ Euro 2020 team due to injury.

Van van Beek, an Ajax academy product, was a key element in the team’s semi-final run in the Champions League in the 2018-19 season. The Netherlands international joined Manchester United for Β£35 million last summer, and he is a smart player. He was expected to be a player who would challenge Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba, but that did not materialize.

Van van Beek only made four Premier League appearances, scoring one goal and assisting on another. The 24-year-old was frequently utilized as a stand-in. So it’ll be interesting to see what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has in mind for him next season. Inter Milan and Arsenal have both been connected with Van de Beek.

#4 Miralem Pjanic

When Juventus and Barcelona decided to switch midfielders, it was one of the most contentious transfers in recent memory. Miralem Pjanic joined Barcelona, while Arthur Melo joined the Serie A giants.

After a season, it would be fair to say that neither athlete had the best of seasons. Pjanic, who was regarded as one of Serie A’s top midfielders, was a benchwarmer at Barcelona, making only six La Liga starts and failing to score or assist.

The 31-year-old has been linked with a return to Juventus, where he is recognized for his flair and technical abilities. Bayern Munich and Chelsea have both been mentioned as possible destinations.
