This summer’s most valuable free agents

The month of July has here, and it brings with it a slew of football-related consequences. Most importantly, it implies that a large number of players have reached the end of their contracts and will be available for free transfers.

Teams are scouring the transfer market for other budget bargains after the likes of Georginio Wijnaldum and Memphis Depay have already signed for new clubs on a free transfer. Free agents Edinson Cavani and Thiago Silva respectively joined Manchester United and Chelsea last season and had a huge impact.

Some major names now have the freedom to move to another club. We take a look at the five most valuable free agents (according to Transfermarkt):

Nikola Maksimovic is ranked #5 in the world with a net worth of €10 million.

When Nikola Maksimovic joined Napoli from Torino in 2016, he cost the club about £19 million.

The Serbian international had previously excelled at Torino, but has struggled to find his feet at Napoli since his arrival. Maksimovic has primarily served as a squad player for the Serie A giants, appearing in 99 games across all competitions. For Napoli, he has never been a reliable starter.
