Earlier this year, both superstars were locked in a heated battle on WWE SmackDown. In January, Edge won the Royal Rumble, and at WrestleMania, he challenged Reigns for the title. However, once Daniel Bryan was put into their encounter at The Grandest Stage of Them All, this match became a triple-threat contest.
In the weeks preceding up to their match, Edge was dissatisfied with the decision and turned heel. After pinning Edge and Bryan by stacking them on top of each other, Roman Reigns was able to retain his Universal Championship. The Rated-R Superstar was visibly dissatisfied, and he returned to WWE SmackDown in search of a new opportunity.
